– New Page Corporation is suspending production at the Port Hawkesbury mill in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia for an indefinite period. According to New Page, the paper machine PM 1, used to manufacture up to 190,000 tpy of newsprint, is to cease production on 10 September. The PM 2, which has a production capacity of 360,000 tpy of SC paper, is to follow on 16 September. The temporary production shutdown at the Port Hawkesbury mill is due to the current state of the market and the state of the general economy, reported New Page. The revaluation of the Canadian dollar against the US dollar as well as high utility and shipment costs are said to be among the other factors negatively influencing the profitability of the Canadian facility.
The company did not disclose when the machines are to resume operation but said it is constantly monitoring the situation in Port Hawkesbury as well as the state of the market and will keep the public informed.
New Page intends to handle part of pre-existing orders for SC paper from its US Duluth mill in Minnesota. In the newsprint segment, customers must put up with shortfalls in supply for the duration of the stoppages as no newsprint will be produced at any other location.
