13 Dec 2016 −

Billerud Korsnäs has announced the decision to build a new board machine and upgrade the existing pulp line at its Gruvön site.

The investment of SEK 5.7 billion (approximately €585 million) – the largest in the company’s history – includes the construction of the new BM at the Gruvön production site and rebuilds in the existing pulp mill.

The new BM 7, which is scheduled to start operation in 2019, will have an annual capacity of 550,000 tonnes of virgin fibre-based board, "making it one of the largest of its kind in the world," the company said. According to Billerud Korsnäs, 50% of the machine’s capacity will be dedicated to the production of liquid packaging board, the other half will be used to manufacture folding boxboard, food service board, and kraftliner.

In addition to growth in liquid packaging board and other cartonboard grades, the investment decision will result in a streamlining of the production structure within the company.
