After switching production from coated to uncoated fine paper at the beginning of the year, Burgo has now completely shut down production at its Avezzano mill in Italy.

Burgo has permanently shut down its Italian Avezzano mill with a capacity of 180,000 tpy of uncoated woodfree paper. A union spokesman said that production had been down since the end of July when machines had been halted for market-related reasons. The stoppage was followed by the usual two-week downtime in the summer. Production should have restarted on 26 August, but employees had been informed in a meeting the previous day that operations would not be resumed, the spokesman explained.

Burgo confirmed the closure but did not provide further details, saying these were yet to be published.

Only at the beginning of the year, Burgo had switched production on the PM 2 at Avezzano from coated to uncoated woodfree paper. The spokesman said that the number of days of production had been increasing steadily since then, starting at 7 days in January and climbing as high as 20 days in recent months.
