Coreboard prices in Italy move upwards in Q4

Coreboard manufacturers' plans to hike prices on the Italian market have borne fruit. They were able to partly implement price increases in the fourth quarter.

Coreboard manufacturers in Italy had partial success in implementing their calls for higher prices. Quite a few manufacturers were already paid a little more for their coreboard in September, and instituted a second hike on 1 October. Others pushed through a single instalment with effect from 1 October. Prices did not alter then in November and December.

Market players said that demand had stood in the way of a larger increase in prices. Manufacturers' slim margins as a result of higher costs, for instance for energy and transportation, tended to have driven the mark-ups. It was also hard to raise prices any more with recovered paper prices not altering, one buyer remarked.

Demand for coreboard remained stable in October compared to the previous month, but was not described as especially rosy, either. Quite a few producers experienced a plunge in order intake lasting around a fortnight in November that many experts were unable to really explain. They typically blamed this on lower demand from core buyers in the stretch film industry. However, the situation had returned to normal at the end of November, and December had been ordinary to date, they added.
