Reports suggest fire could have started in machinery running PfR

A fire at DS Smith’s Birmingham paper recycling depot broke out on Wednesday 1 March and has been brought under control and extinguished. In a press release the company said the fire at the depot started in the morning, but all staff and visitors were safely evacuated and accounted for. There have been no reported injuries from the fire. DS Smith is working with fire investigations teams to establish damage and the cause of the fire.

Early reports suggested that the fire started from machinery running papers for recycling, although the actual source of ignition was still under investigation. A clean-up operation is under way and a temporary operational plan is in place to keep customers serviced and material moving. The fire had been contained and did not spread to any other buildings on or near the site.

In the UK DS Smith is operating 30 corrugated manufacturing sites, 9 recycling depots and one large containerboard mill. The company is collecting more than 5 million t of recovered throughout Europe and claims to be UK's number one recycler of OCC.
