Producers of virgin fibre board supplying the German market have announced price hikes from mid-October or November. They expect the good demand level to support their price plans.

While price negotiations in the recycled board segment were the dominant topic on the cartonboard market in recent months, the virgin fibre board segment now captures the attention of much of the sector at the beginning of October. Major cartonboard producers announced that they would raise prices from mid-October or November. According to EUWID sources, various European competitors are planning similar steps.

Capacity utilisation in the virgin fibre board segment was satisfactory at present, supply and demand were balanced and order intake had stabilised at a good level, said one producer. Insiders expect activity levels to pick up considerably in the next two months, noting that order intake from the cosmetics and confectionery segment was already far more lively than in the first half of the year. "Demand for cartonboard is there", one producer of virgin fibre board stated optimistically with regard to their negotiating position in the talks on a price rise.
