German RCP prices stable, pressure in eastern Germany

Recovered paper prices in Germany remained stable in June. However, there was price pressure on some grades in eastern Germany partly due to a supply surplus in Poland.

The German recovered paper market was quiet towards the middle of June as is usual before summer arrives. Prices for all grades were typically left untouched at May's level, insiders said. A couple of peak prices for supermarket paper and board were capped, but only here and there, especially in cases where adjustments had not been made in May.

Eastern Germany is playing a special role. EUWID sources reported pressure on prices for supermarket paper and board and thus for used corrugated kraft II there. Insiders are blaming reduced purchasing because of issues with new paper prices, especially for recycled corrugated case material.

However, the main reason was the downward trend on the recovered paper market in Poland, where prices tumbled sharply in May in response to a considerable supply surplus. The country's demand for recovered paper fell in May during a two-week maintenance stoppage at Stora Enso's Ostroleka mill. Other converters already had very well-stocked warehouses and were likewise buying less recovered paper. Polish merchants were subsequently trying to find buyers for their excess volumes across the German border.
