The project entrusted to Cadagua covers a new effluent treatment line with anaerobic biogas production.

Corrugated packaging manufacturer Grupo Hinojosa is pushing ahead with the 90,000 t recycled containerboard project at the Papelera de Sarrià mill. The company has tapped Spanish water treatment specialist Cadagua to upgrade the existing facility and install a new waste water treatment line, including a anaerobic paper sludge treatment unit for biogas production. According to Cadagua, the biogas will be used for energy production in the factory boilers, offering a primary energy content of 1.6 MW.

"Among the reasons given by Hinojosa for awarding this project to Cadagua, the persons responsible at Hinojosa point out its successful track record in the paper sector, having references in Saica, Europac, Smurfit-Kappa, Kimberly-Clark, Papelera Alquería, Uipsa, Celesa, etc.," said Cadagua.

Sarrià de Ter mill was operated until October 2014 by Lecta's subsidiary Torraspapel. Lecta decided to shut down the mill and transfer production to other sites in Spain. The mill houses one paper machine with an installed capacity of 65,000 tpy of woodfree uncoated base and specialty papers. Grupo Hinojosa has acquired the mill in July 2015.

According to the local government, Grupo Hinojosa plans to spend some €25m to rebuild the mill to recycled packaging paper production. The start-up of the rebuild machine was originally scheduled for the second quarter of 2016.
