International Paper will increase pulp capacity and cease board production at its Riegelwood facility.

International Paper plans to invest $135m (€125m) to expand fluff pulp production at its Riegelwood mill. The investment will convert the mill to 100 percent fluff and softwood pulp production, adding an incremental 400,000 tons of capacity. When the conversion is complete, the company will have the capability to produce up to 1.4 million tons annually of fluff pulp.

As a result of this conversion, International Paper will reduce its coated paperboard capacity by 350,000 tons and sell the Carolina brand to Meadwestvaco. Carolina is a coated solid bleached board and represents the majority of the coated paperboard volume reduction at the Riegelwood mill.
