Looming summer discounts hamper consolidation of price hikes for WFU paper in Italy

Paper producers were unable to consolidate woodfree uncoated paper prices throughout the Italian market during June. According to EUWID-sources, looming summer discounts and other types of rebates and buying incentives undermined manufacturers’ efforts.

The ultimate outcome and true scope of the current round of price negotiations on Italy’s woodfree uncoated (WFU) paper market remains largely unclear. A number of paper producers said that they had tacked on more for deliveries from 1 May onwards and confirmed that they wanted to retain this new price throughout the summer. Yet, other suppliers seem to have had markedly less success in implementing their price plans.

Paper merchants reported that many paper mills had initially managed to raise prices, but that those mark-ups had not stuck around for long in every case. Manufacturers were looking to keep their customers satisfied offering them summer discounts and other types of rebates and buying incentives, they said. In addition, a few local paper manufacturers did not participate in the price round at all.
