UPM has stopped production at the PM 3 of its Chapelle Darblay mill in France. As a result, 130,000 tpy of newsprint capacity are taken from the market.
UPM has permanently shut down the PM 3 of its Chapelle Darblay mill in France today, as planned. The company had announced several months ago that the newsprint machine would be closed if no acceptable alternatives for the PM would be presented until 20 June. The consultations regarding the closure were finalised at the end of April and approved by the Labour administration in the beginning of June, according to UPM. A total of 187 employees will be affected by the move.
"This year the European newsprint market has faced even stronger headwind than expected, commented Bernd Eikens, Executive Vice President, UPM Paper ENA. The PM 3 has an annual capacity of 130,000 t of newsprint. UPM Chapelle Darblay will continue paper production on the remaining PM 6 producing standard newsprint and improved grades (MFS) with an annual capacity of 250,000 tonnes. After the closure, the mill still employs 211 people.
