No breakthrough in newsprint negotiations in Germany

|

Negotiations on newsprint contracts are still dragging on in Germany. Some market observers expect price negotiations to be settled soon as buyers’ paper inventories started to dwindle in March.

No breakthrough has yet been seen in the newsprint contract negotiations in Germany. The majority of contracts have yet to be concluded. Talks are dragging on as the customers seem to be in no hurry, according to industry sources. The producers’ goal of maintaining the same price levels that applied in the first half of 2011 now seems unrealistic. The question now seems to be whether and, if so, how much, prices will fall below the €500 mark.
There also continues to be disagreement about the price validity periods. Producers are willing to keep the half-year contracts they fought for last year. On the other site, publishing and printing companies want to reinstall full-year contracts stressing their needs for more planning certainty.
