First uncoated fine paper producers announce mark-ups on the market in Poland

The fine paper industry is pretty pleased with the volumes sold in Poland this year, but slim margins and sustained pressure on prices are putting the dampers on this situation.

Local woodfree uncoated paper manufacturers are to venture one last attempt to stabilise prices in Poland before the year's end. This announcement comes several weeks after a major player slashed its domestic prices, especially for offset paper, a move that several other suppliers could not elude. One Polish fine paper producer is now seeking to tack on 3-6% from 1 December onwards, primarily for offset sheet deliveries. Prices in zloty are also poised to rise for reels if producers get their way. Another manufacturer had told its Polish customers of similar plans, but declined to provide more details to EUWID.

Businesses contacted by EUWID were pleased with demand in Poland in October and November, and the outlook for the remainder of the year was rosy. "Poland is one of the few markets that is still going in the second half of December," one observer added.

Buyers anticipate that fine paper prices will continue to decline in 2014. The Polish printing sector remains in a relatively good position, but is growing to the detriment of Western European countries where capacity has been dismantled and reassembled in Poland.
