A fire broke out on Saturday, 14 February, at Saica's paper production and recycling site in Zaragoza, Spain. Firefighters from the Zaragoza municipal brigade extinguished the blaze by Sunday afternoon. No injuries were reported.
According to a company spokesperson, one of the two buildings at the site was affected, with machinery inside severely damaged. Paper production was interrupted but resumed on 16 February, albeit with some limitations. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
At the Zaragoza site, Saica operates two paper machines that produce high-performance containerboard from 100 per cent recycled fibre, primarily testliner and corrugating medium in various grammages. PM 6 has a capacity to produce 235,000 tpy and PM 7 can produce up to 330,000 tpy.
The company operates another paper mill in Spain, three in France, two in Poland and one in the UK, with a total recycled containerboard production capacity of around 4 million tpy.
Saica is one of the leading integrated paper and packaging companies in Europe with its own recycling (Saica Natur) and corrugated packaging (Saica Pack) operations. The company also offers flexible packaging solutions (Saica Flex).
