
DS Smith Packaging Romania, part of International Paper, is investing more than €14m in its packaging operations in Timisoara and Ghimbav in Romania. The investments are aimed at expanding production capabilities, modernising infrastructure and improving operational efficiency.
The largest share of the investment programme, amounting to €10.5m, is earmarked for the Timisoara plant and is scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2027. According to the company, DS Smith also plans to install a new converting line designed to broaden the site’s packaging portfolio, as well as automation measures, a comprehensive transformation of the production flow and an expansion of the finished goods warehouse.
The investment is to enable growth with existing and new customers, improve efficiency and logistics, and shorten delivery times.

In parallel, DS Smith’s corrugated packaging plant in Ghimbav near Brasov is set to receive an additional investment of €3.6m in 2026. The funds will be used to modernise infrastructure and upgrade corrugated board production equipment with the aim of increasing operational performance and production capacity.
According to the report, the ongoing programme follows investments of €13m already made at the site since 2023.
DS Smith also highlighted Romania’s growing role within the group’s innovation activities. The company said Romania had been designated as an innovation hub at the beginning of 2026 and now hosts specialised multidisciplinary teams developing and testing packaging concepts for global brands.
