DS Smith’s project for new containerboard machine in Italy is progressing

DS Smith is progressing with its project for installing a new PM at its Italian Porcari mill near Lucca. Machine builder Valmet announced it had received an order from the group to deliver the new recycled corrugated case material machine for the site.

Plans for such a project had been expressed already in 2018, but the final investment decision was taken in September last year. DS Smith said it would replace an older machine with a capacity of 175,000 tpy with a new one, which will have a capacity of 450,000 tpy of lightweight brown testliner and corrugating medium, with grammages ranging from 70-135 g/m. According to Valmet, the new PM will have a wire width of 8.6 m and a design speed of 1,700 m/min. The start-up is scheduled for mid-2025.

The Porcari site currently produces recycled corrugated case material on two machines. Besides the PM to be replaced, it houses a second machine with a capacity of 235,000 tpy.
