Up to 210 jobs at various locations at photo and decor paper manufacturer Felix Schoeller are currently under threat. According to the German IGBCE trade union, around 150 of the 700 employees at the paper mill in Weißenborn are affected.
The reason for the job cuts is a strategic reorganisation of the company. In order to withstand increasing competitive pressure and changing market conditions, the company will focus on sustainably profitable products in future, according to a statement.
As part of the transformation, which goes by the name of "Reinvent", the paper manufacturer had previously decided to close the paper mill in Penig at the end of 2025. Schoeller mainly produces dark decor papers and regenerated papers here with a capacity of 30,000 tpy. The company is shifting production from the Penig mill to other mills "to ensure profitability and long-term competitiveness."
Hans-Christoph Gallenkamp, CEO of the company, informed employees about the planned steps at a staff meeting on 12 February. According to the press release, Gallenkamp is endeavouring to find socially acceptable solutions for the employees affected together with the workforce and works council.
Speciality paper manufacturer Felix Schoeller was founded in 1895 and has 17 sites in ten countries. Imaging papers with a capacity of 105,000 tpy are produced at the paper mill in Weissenborn.
