German containerboard producer Julius Schulte Trebsen scraps capacity expansion project

JST will not pursue the plan for the installation of a new 700,000 tpy recycled containerboard machine at the mill in Trebsen, near Leipzig.

German recycled containerboard manufacturer Julius Schulte Trebsen (JST) announced its decision not to invest in a new containerboard machine and to terminate the corresponding expansion project.

The company blames its decision on the lack of a long-term, reliable framework for such an important investment. The high energy costs in Germany were expected to continue on an upward path amid the country's energy system transition, the company said. This was compounded by higher construction costs and the general economic situation, which was already having a significant impact on the packaging industry, and the geopolitical tensions and uncertainties, it added.

JST runs one containerboard machine with an installed capacity of up to 240,000 tpy. The company produces many different corrugated case material grades in basis weights of 120-320 g/m² such as recycled fluting, testliner and topkraft-liner. The new containerboard machine PM 2 was planned to produce 2,200 tpd and increase the company's annual production capacity by 700,000 t.
