A major fire has severely damaged a warehouse at the mill of German cores producer Merker in Oranienburg. The fire broke out on Sunday, 5 July and was not fully extinguished until the early hours of Wednesday 8 July.
According to the firefighters, the middle hall of the site was completely destroyed, while the flames were prevented from spreading to the two adjacent buildings. Firefighting operations proved difficult due to the materials stored in the building. According to the city of Oranienburg, the warehouse contained paper and a photovoltaic system was installed on the roof.
The police estimates the damage caused by the fire at several million euros. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Merker is a medium-sized family-owned company, which produces paper cores for several applications such as paper, films, adhesive tapes, textiles, cables as well as cores for packaging and other industrial uses.
