Mayr-Melnhof confirms to EUWID that the company is discontinuing the production of cupstock at its Kotka mill in Finland. The decision marks the end of production of a substitute for PE-coated beverage cups.

In 2015, under the previous owner Kotkamills, the paper machine at the Kotka mill was converted from magazine paper to the production of folding boxboard and coated barrier board.

According to Kotkamills, the BM 2 was the first machine in the world at the time to apply dispersion barrier coatings directly online and to produce barrier-coated board that did not contain plastic and could therefore be recycled via the recovered paper stream.

At the time of the acquisition in 2020, Mayr-Melnhof said that Kotka would make an important contribution to MM's sustainability strategy within the group and could offer innovative solutions to replace plastics. The mill will continue to focus on the development of sustainable and innovative products.

The capacity of the rebuilt board machine was 400,000 tonnes. The amount of cupstock now freed up will be used to produce primary-fibre board instead.
