Mercer International will idle production at its Rosenthal pulp mill in Germany in September. The company is extending a maintenance shutdown originally planned for two weeks to cover the entire month.
Mercer Rosenthal employs around 400 people and produces a range of wood-based products, including kraft pulp, tall oil and lignin. The company puts the mill’s pulp capacity at 360,000 tpy of northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp. Mercer also operates a large biomass power plant at the Rosenthal site, with a capacity of 413 MW thermal and 57 MW electrical.
Mercer has not explicitly commented on the reasons behind the extended maintenance downtime in September. However, market conditions for European softwood pulp producers are currently considered challenging with high fibre costs and weak prices shaping the market.
