Metsä Board to close Tako board mill by June 2025

Metsä Board has finalised change negotiations for the Tako and Kyro mills initiated in January 2025, resulting in the permanent closure of its Tako board mill in Finland.

Alongside the shutdown, the operational efficiency of the Kyro board mill will be improved. These measures will lead to a total reduction of 208 jobs.

Production at Tako board mill is set to cease by the end of the second quarter of 2025 at the latest. However, Metsä Board assures that customer deliveries will not be impacted, as the company’s total annual folding boxboard (FBB) production capacity remains sufficient to meet existing demand.

At the Tako mill, Metsä operates two board machines with a total capacity of 210,000 tpy FBB. The board machine at the Kyro mill can produce up to 190,000 tpy of FBB. Following the closure, Metsä Board’s annual FBB capacity will stand at approximately 1.4 million t.

The company expects the restructuring to enhance its annual comparable Ebitda by around €39m, primarily from the second half of 2025. However, a one-off negative profit impact of approximately €-28m, mainly related to the impairment of assets, will be recorded in the first quarter of 2025 as an item affecting comparability. Additionally, a one-off cash impact of approximately €-1m is anticipated.
