Omnifiber suspends recycling project for paper-based composite packaging in Germany

Omnifiber has put its planned recycling project for composite paper packaging and beverage cartons in Schmölln, Germany on hold. Citing disagreements between the financing banks and the leasing company involved, the company said that the project would not be realised as originally planned.

Omnifiber announced the plans to build the recycling plant in October 2025, with commissioning expected to start in the second half of 2026. The project had been developed over the past three years together with partners from industry, plant engineering, government and public administration.

"We very much regret this development. Given tightening regulatory requirements for the recycling of composite packaging, Omnifiber could have made an important contribution to expanding recycling capacity," said managing director Markus Hildebrandt....
