Suzano to curb pulp production in a challenging market

Suzano plans to reduce market pulp production by 3.5 per cent over the next 12-month operational cycle.

Brazil's pulp and paper producer Suzano Papel e Celulose (Suzano), leading global BEK (bleached eucalyptus kraft) pulp producer, has announced its decision to curb production of market pulp amid market pressures. The company said it would cut market pulp output over the next twelve months of the operational cycle by approximately 3.5 per cent when compared to its nominal market pulp production capacity. Suzano's puts its total market pulp capacity at 13.4 million tpy.

"The decision is based on the assessment that such production volume would not generate adequate returns for the company, given a more challenging pulp market environment," Suzano said.

Suzano had resorted to similar measures in 2023 and 2024, seeking to adjust its market pulp output by 4 per cent respectively in response to the market dynamics.

For the trailing twelve months ended 30 June 2025, Suzano reported total market pulp shipments of 11.84 million t. Pulp deliveries in the second quarter amounted to 3.27 million t, an increase of 28 per cent year-on-year, and 23 per cent when compared to the previous quarter of 2025.The increase was mainly due to higher volumes sold to Asia and North America [and] was supported by higher volumes produced by the new Ribas do Rio Pardo [Cerrado] mill, Suzano stated in its Q2 earnings release on 6 August.
