Finnish technology group Valmet will supply an automation solution to Klingele Paper & Packaging aimed at improving resource efficiency at the company’s Weener paper mill in northern Germany.
According to Valmet, the new automation measures are expected to significantly cut the use of surface starch in production. This reduction will also lower water consumption and, in turn, the amount of steam required for drying processes.
"We are committed to improving our environmental performance continuously. Taking this new step in digitalisation will help us on that journey,” commented Johannes Reiners, Operations Manager at the Weener mill.
Valmet said that three newly developed automation solutions will be connected with the existing Valmet automation environment at Weener. The integration will create an optimisation loop that continuously collects and analyses process data to fine-tune key variables. "The total solution will enable ongoing process optimisation,” said Martin Grundmann, Senior Sales Manager, Automation Solutions at Valmet.
Klingele operates three paper mills (Klingele Weener, Germany; Blue Paper, France; and Nova Campina, Brazil), and 13 corrugated board plants. The company has 3,100 employees and reported sales of €1bn in 2024.
