The EU has widened sanctions again Russia and imposed an import ban on wood, wood products, CTMP and certain kraft paper grades.

On 8 April 2022, the details of the fifth sanctions package against Russia were published in the Official Journal of the European Union. This means that the additional measures laid down in the regulations, including the ban on CTMP, uncoated kraft paper and timber imports from Russia, entered into force on 9 April. The publication follows adoption by the Council of the European Union, also on Friday.

Products of the HS code groups 44 (wood, wood products and charcoal), 4705 (wood pulp obtained by a combination of mechanical and chemical pulping processes) and 4804 (uncoated kraft paper and paperboard) may no longer be imported into the EU as of 9 April. There are exceptions for contracts concluded before this date. In these cases, there is a transitional period until 10 July.
