EU institutions formally confirm EUDR postponement by one year

EU Parliament and the Council have both formally adopted to delay the application of the EU deforestation regulation by 12 months to the end of 2025.

On 17 December 2024, the European Parliament in its plenary session has confirmed the agreement reached with the Council on the European Commission's proposal to postpone the application timeline of the EUDR by one year.

One day later, the European Council also formally adopted the regulation on the postponement of application of the EU deforestation law by one year. 

The formal adoption by the Council marks the final step in the ordinary legislative procedure. Now that the final legislative hurdles have been overcome, "the regulation will now be signed and published in the Official Journal of the EU, so that it can enter into force before the end of the year, the Council announced.

The EUDR law is affecting products made from cattle, wood, cocoa, soy, palm oil, coffee, rubber and some of their derived products, such as pulp and paper. The regulation was actually meant to be be applied from 30 December 2024. Following this amendment, the law will start to apply on 30 December 2025 for big companies and operators while small companies and micro enterprises will get an additional six months to comply with the obligations of the EUDR.
