European magazine paper prices impacted by structural decline

After having peaked at the beginning of the year, prices for magazine papers in Europe started to decline again to reach or even undercut pre-increase price levels in July.

As the structural decline is having an impact on all printing paper segments in Europe, magazine papers seem to be especially affected. Prices for LWC and SC paper grades in France, Germany, Italy and the UK have reached or even undercut the pre-increase price levels from December 2018.

Experts talking to EUWID said that abundant supply coupled with much lower demand are the main reasons for this development. What is more, some believe that the high prices paper suppliers pushed through in January 2019 have overstretched the frame and accelerated the market decline.

Paper suppliers now hope that measures to curtail production and idle capacities will help to stabilise the market in the second half of the year. The upcoming start of the catalogue season might also provide a glimmer of hope.
