Smurfit Kappa Roermond Papier reports a fire at the recovered paper yard. SKG gives the all clear; containerboard production not affected.

A fire has hit Smurfit Kappa's recycled containerboard mill in Roermond, Netherlands, on 22 August. According to Smurfit Kappa Group (SKG), the blaze started at 2.30 pm when part of the bales stored in the recovered paper yard outside the mill caught fire. The fire has been brought under control within an hour and the extinguishing of the bales was expected within the next hours, SKG said.

There were no injuries reported. Production and containerboard transportation were not affected by the incident, the company said.

Smurfit Kappa Roermond Papier runs three paper machines. Total production capacity amounts to 550,000 tpy of recycled containerboard.

Train traffic through the area has been temporary halted due to dense smoke plumes that reduced visibility. However, air quality testing in the area showed no dangerous levels of pollution, SKG stated.
