German sack kraft paper prices drop in Q1 despite good demand

Good capacity utililsation levels would suggest rising prices for sack kraft paper in Germany. However, hikes are not an issue at the moment and looking at the quarter as a whole, prices declined.

Producers of sack kraft paper were reporting seasonally good activity levels in the first quarter in Germany. Converters were nevertheless able to negotiate mark-downs for the first quarter of 2020.

However, during the quarter - and even before covid-19 started making major headlines - it was already becoming apparent that the price downturn has ended. In light of the good demand, sack kraft paper producers said the time was ripe for price hikes. However, owing to the rapid global spread of the coronavirus pandemic, it appears that these plans are now fading into the background again.
