The port strikes on the US East Coast and Gulf Coast were suspended after just two days.
On 3 October, the following joint statement was published:
"The International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd. have reached a tentative agreement on wages and have agreed to extend the Master Contract until 15 January 2025 to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all other outstanding issues. Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume."
On 1 October port workers in ports along the US East Coast and Gulf Coast went on strike after negotiations on conditions for the new master contract which expired on 30 September broke down. A protracted industrial action of that scale has the potential to cause significant disruption to global trade and to operations of US businesses, including those in the forestry industry.
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has now "encouraged both parties to a new agreement quickly to ensure essential ports operations remain open and avoid a second wave of disruption."
