Italy: cartonboard prices stable in May despite weaker demand and better availability

Companies doing business on Italy’s cartonboard market had mixed opinions about the state of business in May.

Some market players feel that cartonboard remains a scarce commodity and ensuring adequate supply is clearly being prioritised over prices. These EUWID sources also expressed concern about the production stoppage at one GD board mill in France being extended until the end of the year and about output curtailments at a few Nordic GC board mills.

A few other EUWID contacts reported a slowdown in demand and better availability across all cartonboard grades for weeks now. A run on volumes and an unquestioning willingness to pay any price imposed by manufacturers were not evident in May, sources said. In a few instances, orders had not been called off because of high prices and customers were calling for price reductions for volumes delivered in June at the latest.
