The emerging development already seen on the German market for kraft and sulphite paper in the fourth quarter of last year continued in January. Manufacturers are still reporting a good to very good order backlog and order intake that only the earnings position is casting a shadow on. High raw material and fixed costs in particular put results for 2010 under strain everywhere. In view of the fact that no easing in costs is to be expected at least in the near future, said a producer, prices really ought to be raised again, though the leeway required for this is limited at present.
