The acquisition of DMI will significantly increase Mercer's market pulp capacities and strengthen its position on the pulp markets in North America and Asia.

Mercer International Inc has completed its previously announced acquisition of Daishowa-Marubeni International (DMI). DMI owns 100% of a bleached kraft pulp mill in Peace River, Alberta and has a 50% interest in the Cariboo Pulp and Paper Company, a joint venture which operates a bleached kraft pulp mill in Quesnel, British Columbia. The total capacity of the acquired operations in Canada amounts to 645,000 tpy of softwood and hardwood kraft pulp.

Daishowa-Marubeni was a joint venture of Japanese companies Nippon Paper Industries and Marubeni Corporation, which each held a 50% share. The joint venture was founded in 1969 in British Columbia to produce and sell market pulp.
