New market player: Braxcel to build 1.5 tpy BEK pulp mill in Tocantins

South America is already home to the largest pulp mills and huge capacities are planned to come on line with the next couple of years. Now, another new player is entering the international pulp markets.

Companhia Brasileira de Celulose (Braxcel) is planning a new pulp mill in the Brasilian state of Tocantins. As was communicted by the government of Tocantins and Braxcel’s parent company Grupo GMR, the company is ready to build a BEK pulp mill with an annual capacity of 1.5 million t that is planned to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2018. Moreover, Braxcel is seeking environmental approval to expand its capacity to 3 million tpy until 2023.
The pulp mill is to be contructed in the community of Peixe in the southern part of Tocantins. It is planned to be connected to Brazil’s North-South railroad system in order for trains to be able to easily reach the port of Itaqui in Maranhão.
Braxcel’s CEO is Mauro Cerchiari who was Vice President at International Paper and President of Brasil Eco Diesel before.
