Although demand for recovered paper from Polish converters was described as stable, prices for lower grades receded again in April and May against the background of abundant supply all over Europe.
In Poland prices of ordinary recovered paper grades have again dipped sharply in the last five to six weeks. Supermarket paper and board turned cheaper in May by about €20/t on an average while larger buyers were offered even higher discounts, recovered paper merchants told EUWID. The downturn in prices is again more pronounced than in Germany, after prices had already declined more in Poland than in the neighbouring country at the beginning of the year. Surveyed market players said they expect prices to yield further in June.
Although the country’s involvement in recovered paper exports to the Far East is only minimal, the failure in the recovery of exports to China encouraged the fall in prices in the Polish market as elsewhere. In the wake of the ensuing Europe-wide oversupply, exports to Germany were seen to recede sharply of late, reports said.
On the other hand, surveyed merchants have so far not seen a significant drop in demand from buyers in Poland. Although recovered paper stocks of Polish paper manufacturers are also high, deliveries are still accepted, reports added. Despite a string of bank holidays in April and May (altogether five in Poland) converters faced no difficulties in supply thanks to good availability.
