Rigid Containers to build new corrugated packaging plant

A new facility for corrugated packaging production and a distribution centre are to be build in England’s South West. The new site will be entirely financed by Rigid’s parent company VPK Packaging.

Rigid Containers plans to build a new plant for corrugated packaging in the southwest of England. The company announced in the middle of February that the plant, covering an area of about 18,600m², will be built in Wellington, Somerset; a distribution centre will already be operational at the site by April 2013.

Richard Coward, managing director of Rigid, explained the future strategy of the company in a press release. “In the course of 2013, we plan to install several converting machines in Wellington. Rigid will cover the entire range of corrugated board packaging in Wellington including corrugated containers, die-cut containers and multi-point glued products.” Production of packaging is scheduled to begin in summer 2013. Rigid will relocate a part of the necessary machinery from its existing sites and buy the rest. The company’s Desborough and Selby sites are also set to be upgraded. These sites will get new replacements for the older machines when they are relocated to Wellington.

With the inauguration of the distribution centre, Rigid said, 30-40 new jobs will be created. More employees will be added to the workforce when packaging production begins.

Rigid Containers belongs to the Belgian VPK Packaging Group. The parent company did not provide details of the size of its investment in the UK. Rigid only said that the investment will amount to several million pounds which will be fully borne by VPK Packaging.
