Sappi Alfeld mill hit by fire

Production on PM 3 down, but all other paper machines up and running.

Sappi Europe's Alfeld paper mill was hit by a fire on Tuesday evening. According to the company, the fire broke out in the area of paper machine PM 3.

"There have been no recorded casualties and an evaluation by official experts is underway to assess the cause of the fire and the resulting damage to the paper machine," Sappi reported.

Other paper machines at the Alfeld site were not affected and were reportedly fully operational.

At the Alfeld mill, Sappi produces coated and uncoated specialty papers and bleached solid board (SBB) on five paper machines. Paper and board is offered in basis weights ranging from 18 g/m² to 400 g/m².
