White Birch Paper has announced plans to temporarily cease production at its Stadacona newsprint mill in Quebec city as from 9 December. Decreasing demand for newsprint as well as higher fibre costs are said to be the reasons for the measure. For similar reasons, the company's subsidiary SP Newsprint located in Greenwich, Connecticut has filed for creditor protection under Chapter 11 in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The newsprint producer said he intended to explore options to continue its business as a going concern.
