European daily nationals continue to join forces to improve print and online content
Poland's newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza could well join the Leading European Newspaper Alliance (LENA) soon. A spokeswoman of Polish publishing and media group Agora SA confirmed that corresponding applications and procedures had been initiated and were currently being dealt with. Agora filed an application with the German Federal Cartel Office for the "acquisition of joint control over the Leading European Newspaper Alliance”. According to the spokeswoman, Agora intends to be part of the alliance of leading European newspapers that was founded two years ago.
Six national European dailies established the Leading European Newspaper Alliance in 2015 with a focus on the exchange of editorial content. The participants (El Pais, Spain; La Repubblica, Italy; Le Figaro, France; Le Soir, Belgium; Tribune de Genève; Tages-Anzeiger; Switzerland; and Die Welt, Germany) founded the alliance and declared that they shared a series of common values regarding the importance of high-quality journalism in the structuring of open and democratic societies and their economic progress and social justice. The alliance also intended to secure a technological, commercial and editorial edge for its members; to this end, it would select appropriate cooperation partners, said the founder members.
