Cartonboard sellers and buyers discussing price reductions in France

Producers of cartonboard are putting up resistance to calls for lower prices in France. However, most players expect that cartonboard will cost slightly less as of 1 January.

In December, negotiations are taking place to determine prices as of the beginning of 2020, and although not all contracts were concluded as of the second week of December, it is already clear that mark-downs are being discussed for both GD and GC.

Negotiations on GD prices are not only being influenced by the demand development, but also by the recovered paper price trend, which is prompting many customers to push for price cuts. On the GC market, the main issue is the softening demand and in some cases buyers are pointing to inexpensive offers from Latin America as an argument for price reductions. Many market participants expect that the negotiations could last into first week or two of the new year.
