Caustic soda prices surge in response to downtimes at chlorine plants

The caustic soda market is tight given the planned and unplanned stoppages at produciton plants that occurred in the past months. Prices have therefore risen and are poised to increase further.

The caustic soda (NaOH) market in Western Europe has been showing signs of scarcity over recent weeks. Scheduled and unscheduled maintenance breaks have disrupted market equilibrium. Producers report that production facilities are continuing to take downtime in the third quarter of 2021.

Amidst strong demand and low supply, suppliers have partly resorted to substantial price hikes in the second quarter. And negotiations for terms and conditions for deliveries in the third quarter indicate that prices are poised to rise again, by an even larger sum.

Experts add that logistics has become increasingly relevant in negotiations. Market players report delayed deliveries. The shortage of truck drivers is currently acute, several EUWID respondents report
