Containerboard market in France gearing up for possible price reductions in October

Inventory levels in Europe were still relatively high recently, but producers hope that a seasonal demand uptick and some planned downtime measures lead to an inventory drawdown.

Demand for recycled corrugated case material in France was patchy over the summer months. After a very weak June, July was a relatively good month, but then August saw another significant dip in demand. And now in September, respondents say interest is picking up again. Overall, however, order intake at the paper factories in September is not better than average. Some respondents are hoping for more orders in October. As of August, deliveries of corrugated case material in France were down slightly this year compared with last year.

In September, prices for brown and white recycled corrugated case material in France were usually unchanged from the previous month, thus continuing the sideways trend of recent months. This stability could come to an end with the October deliveries, though, since in the final week of September producers and buyers were in talks discussing price reductions. Cuts for October deliveries are considered possible, but final results of the negotiations were not yet known as EUWID went to press.

There is also growing price pressure again on the market for kraftliner. For brown as well as white kraftliner, there were sometimes price reductions for September deliveries, or mark-downs were still being negotiated for October shipments.

Quotes for semi-chemical fluting are still reportedly quite stable. The last downward price corrections occurred in early summer.
