Cost pressure overshadows volume growth for corrugated industry in Germany

Despite a solid growth in deliveries, which was mainly fuelled by e-commerce, sales of the German corrugated industry decreased in 2020.

2020 was a good year for the German corrugated board industry, at least in terms of volume. The producers organised in the VDW, the association of the German corrugated board manufacturing industry, were able to surpass their prognosticated aim of 0.5 per cent growth in deliveries of corrugated board sales per working day. Compared with 2019, they recorded 0.9 per cent growth during the pandemic in 2020 and, in doing so, benefitted above all from the rise in online sales.

Fuelled by closures in brick and mortar retail trade, the industry saw another pronounced growth spurt in e-commerce. Online sales rose further by 14.6 per cent in 2020 compared to the year before.

However, the industry recorded a decline in overall sales and in earnings per square metre due to higher costs.
