Newsprint production at the former UPM Kymmene paper mill to be continued until the end of October.
Germany's packaging and magazine paper manufacturer Leipa Georg Leinfelder GmbH has postponed the conversion of the 280,000 tonne/yr newsprint machine at the former UPM Schwedt mill in Germany, by five weeks. According to Leipa, the start of the project is now scheduled for the end of October and newsprint operations are to be continued in this period.
Leipa has acquired the Schwedt newsprint mill from UPM last year with the aim to rebuild and convert the newsprint paper machine PM 11 to recycled containerboard production. The capacity of Leipa's future PM 5 is quoted at 450,000 tpy of white-top testliner grades. The company has entrusted Voith with the conversion work.
Leipa puts the total investment cost for the Schwedt mill project at €240m. The company initially planned to discontinue newsprint production and commence the rebuild work on the paper machine at the end of September.
