After corrugated board deliveries in Germany failed to live up to expectations in 2018, negative growth is expected in the first half of 2019.

The German corrugated board industry continued to grow in 2018, but growth fell considerably behind the anticipated growth rate of 3.9 per cent. Member companies of industry association VDW delivered nearly 8 billion m² in 2018, 43 million m² or 0.6 per cent more than in 2017. The last two quarters even saw deliveries slip by around 1 per cent.

This negative development is expected to continue in the first half of this year, with growth rates predicted to amount to -0.5 per cent and -1 per cent for the first and second quarter respectively.

Potential deterrents to growth could be an impending no-deal Brexit as well as extended US trade sanctions, according to the VDW.
