A leak in the recovery boiler caused a downtime at Fibre Excellence's 290,000 tpy pulp mill in Saint-Gaudens, France. Production has been down for two weeks now.

French pulp producer Fibre Excellence had to stop production at its Saint-Gaudens mill in France because of an incident that occurred on 15 May. The mill is still down and will not resume before the end of May at the earliest. In June, production will be halted again for major maintenance.

A leak in the recovery boiler caused a salt flow which was quickly contained, the company reported. After an inspection by the competent authorities, Fibre Excellence on 18 May was allowed to start cleaning and repair work, which is expected to be finalised at the end of the month. Before re-commissioning the boiler, the company must get green light from the authorities. It is therefore not yet clear when pulp production can be resumed.

The Saint-Gaudens mill has a capacity of 290,000 tpy of bleached pulp. Last year, the company produced 182,000 t of hardwood and 98,000 t of softwood pulp.
