Fine paper prices under pressure in France

Demand for woodfree uncoated paper, which was stronger than for coated grades, had often failed to live up to already low expectations until now.

Market players described business on the French fine paper market as rather weak in the first months of the year. And prices have recently reversed course.

Cheap spot lots are doing the rounds on the market for woodfree uncoated paper in France and some list prices have reportedly already been lowered. A few paper manufacturers plan to resist and say that they are determined to defend their list prices. The pricing situation is mixed in April.

French woodfree coated paper prices have come under even stronger downward pressure. Many contacts are confirming that a number of prices have been reduced in the past few weeks. Manufacturers are on the lookout for orders and offering attractive prices to land them, the say. However, not all market players are confirming that prices have fallen. Some manufacturers said that they were sticking to their prices since they could not afford to reduce their sales prices since costs remain high.
