First glimmers of hope of revival on Germany’s newsprint market

Players on the newsprint market in Germany are seeing the first glimmers of hope. There are first signs of a revival in the business with advertising flyers and inserts.

As Germany starts to ease some of the lockdown measures it imposed to stem the spread of the coronavirus, this seems to be having positive effects on the market for newsprint. At least, newspaper publishers say they are hopeful that advertising will return in June. Commercial printers, too, say they are seeing signs that the inserts business is coming back to life.

Nevertheless, things are still a long way off from normal levels, respondents say. Facing an extreme drop in demand, paper producers are idling machines. Printing companies are often refusing to accept contractually agreed volumes.
