France: market players discuss price cuts to newsprint and SC paper prices

Price talks are currently underway on the publication paper market in France. Most EUWID-sources believe that prices of newsprint and SC paper could be reduced for deliveries as of January next year. For LWC, producers believe that they might be able to keep selling prices stable in view of the capacities idled currently.

During the second half of November, producers and buyers of publication paper in France are at the negotiating table to discuss terms and conditions for deliveries as of 1 January. Newsprint buyers entered into the price talks calling for considerable mark-downs in some cases, but producers were unwilling to agree to such amounts.

Negotiations on quarterly and half-year contracts for magazine paper are also taking place in France these days. Here as well, paper producers are trying to defend current price levels. In the SC paper segment especially, price reductions appear to be on the horizon. Paper producers themselves say these will be almost unavoidable. The two sides are no longer discussing the buyers' maximum demands, but reductions with lesser amounts were definitely possible, according to market participants.
